Maruti Suzuki April sales hit record 2.39 lakh units, up 33%
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest carmaker, posted its highest-ever April sales of 2,39,646 units in April 2026, marking a sharp 33.29% jump over 1,79,791 units sold in the same month last year. The record signals a strong start to the new financial year, driven by broad-based demand across segments — from entry-level mini cars to utility vehicles.
Record Domestic Sales Surpass Previous Peak
Domestic sales climbed to an all-time high of 1,91,122 units in April, up from 1,42,053 units a year ago. This surpasses the company's previous domestic peak of 1,82,165 units recorded in December 2025, underscoring sustained consumer appetite for Maruti's portfolio even as broader economic conditions remain mixed.
Mini and Compact Cars Lead the Surge
Growth was most pronounced in the entry-level segment. The mini car category — comprising models like Alto and S-Presso — more than doubled to 16,066 units from just 6,332 units in April 2025, suggesting a revival in first-time buyer demand. The compact segment, which includes Baleno, Swift, Dzire, and WagonR, also delivered strong numbers, rising to 80,659 units from 61,912 units a year earlier.
SUV Momentum Holds Firm
The utility vehicle portfolio continued its upward trajectory, reflecting sustained consumer preference for SUVs. Sales in this segment — spanning Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, and Grand Vitara — climbed to 77,892 units from 59,022 units in the corresponding period last year. Notably, this is the third consecutive quarter in which Maruti's UV segment has posted year-on-year growth above 30%.
Exports and LCV Performance
Exports contributed significantly to overall growth, rising to 40,054 units in April from 27,911 units a year earlier — a jump of over 43%. Meanwhile, sales of the light commercial vehicle Super Carry remained broadly stable at 3,418 units, marginally higher than 3,349 units reported in April 2025.
Record Annual Production and Ambitious Targets Ahead
The April sales milestone follows another landmark: Maruti Suzuki achieved its highest-ever annual production volume of 23.4 lakh units in FY2025-26, making it the only original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to reach this production level for passenger vehicles. The company is also the only facility within Suzuki Motor Corporation's global manufacturing network to achieve this volume, according to its official statement. Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki has set an ambitious target of scaling production capacity to approximately 40 lakh units per annum.
