New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) Major telecom operator Bharti Airtel announced on Wednesday that its founder and Chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, will resign from his position as Chairman of Airtel Africa following the company's annual general meeting (AGM) in July 2026.
The firm also revealed that Gopal Vittal is set to be appointed as the new Non-Executive Chairman of Airtel Africa effective from the same date.
Since its listing in 2019, Mittal has held the chairmanship of Airtel Africa, and the Board commended his leadership and significant contributions throughout his tenure.
Gopal Vittal, who is currently a non-executive director of Airtel Africa and has extensive experience in the telecom sector, has been nominated by the controlling stakeholder in accordance with existing agreements.
Additionally, Shravin Bharti Mittal will assume the role of Deputy Chairman, ensuring a seamless transition within the promoter group and serving as a vital link between the Board, Airtel Money operations, and the company's headquarters in Dubai.
In a separate announcement, Annika Poutiainen will step down from the Board after more than seven years of service, coinciding with the July AGM.
Mittal expressed that it was a privilege to lead Airtel Africa and conveyed his confidence in the company’s future strategy and leadership. The senior independent director, Tsega Gebreyes, also recognized Mittal’s pivotal role in steering Airtel Africa’s growth, from its acquisition phase to its current esteemed position within the FTSE 100 index.
