Key Takeaways
On April 2, in a significant announcement from New Delhi, Bharti Airtel has proudly disclosed that it has achieved a remarkable milestone of 650 million customers worldwide, positioning itself as the second-largest telecom operator globally in terms of subscriber numbers.
Under the leadership of Sunil Bharti Mittal, the telecom giant has established a robust footprint in both India and Africa. In India alone, Airtel boasts over 368 million mobile subscribers, as per the insights from GSMA Intelligence.
This figure encompasses 13 million households connected via fixed broadband and 15 million customers utilizing its Digital TV services.
In the African market, its subsidiary, Airtel Africa, caters to 179 million customers across 14 nations, providing essential services such as high-speed data, voice communication, and mobile financial solutions. Over 52 million users in the region depend on its financial service offerings.
Despite this tremendous global success, Airtel remains the second-largest telecom provider in India, trailing behind Reliance Jio, which surpassed 500 million subscribers last year but is limited to operations within India.
Commenting on this landmark achievement, Gopal Vittal, the Executive Vice Chairman of Airtel, emphasized that attaining 650 million customers brings a significant responsibility, and the company is committed to enhancing customer experience through innovation and dependable services.
He further stated that Airtel aspires to elevate standards in the telecom sector.
The company has also been a pioneer in technological advancements, being one of the first operators to launch 5G services in India.
A report from Kotak Equities notes that Airtel’s subscriber base has been on a consistent upward trajectory, with a compounded annual growth rate of 2.9 percent projected between FY21 and FY26.
Moreover, the data subscriber base is expanding even more rapidly at 9.7 percent, indicating a shift towards higher-value customers.
The report also pointed out the considerable potential for growth, particularly in rural areas and in mobile broadband services.
Interestingly, nearly 20 percent of Airtel’s users are still utilizing 2G and 3G networks, highlighting an opportunity for the company to transition these customers to faster, premium services.
