Elon Musk Found Liable for Deceptive Practices During Twitter Acquisition
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) A federal jury in California has ruled that Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, is liable for misleading shareholders of Twitter (now known as X) during his 2022 takeover attempt by making false statements that negatively impacted the company’s stock value.
Musk allegedly attempted to renegotiate or back out of a $44 billion deal for X through these misleading statements.
The jury determined that two out of three contested statements Musk made in May 2022—including tweets and remarks on a podcast asserting that Twitter had an excessive number of fake accounts—were intentionally deceptive and misled shareholders, leading them to sell their shares, according to various reports.
Despite this, the court cleared Musk of claims that he orchestrated a fraudulent scheme against investors. The jurors dismissed two additional fraud allegations but concluded that Musk’s actions constituted intentional deceit.
He was defending himself against accusations of falsely asserting that Twitter underreported the number of fake and spam accounts, commonly referred to as bots, present on its platform.
As a result of the verdict, investors in Twitter are expected to receive $2.6 billion in damages, as reported by Mark Molumphy, a lawyer representing the investors.
As of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk's net worth was recorded at $661.1 billion. Recently, his social media platform X warned creators that they would be suspended from its revenue-sharing program for 90 days if they posted AI-generated videos related to armed conflicts without proper disclosure regarding AI usage.
Nikita Bier, X's Product Head, announced this initiative as part of a broader effort to prevent manipulation and ensure access to authentic information during wartime.
The platform has also introduced a “Made with AI” label to inform users about content created with artificial intelligence. In light of the ongoing US-Israel military actions against Iran and the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Musk and Bier noted that traffic on the platform reached an all-time high.
