New Delhi, Aug 12 (NationPress) Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has issued a threat of legal action against the tech giant Apple, claiming that the company is unfairly promoting the OpenAI application in its App Store.

According to Musk, his own AI venture, xAI, has been unable to secure the top position on the App Store due to this alleged bias.

In a post on X, he stated, "Apple is acting in a way that prevents any AI company other than OpenAI from achieving the number one spot in the App Store, constituting a clear antitrust violation. xAI will pursue legal action immediately."

He further remarked, "What options do we have? Apple didn’t merely tilt the scales; they placed their entire weight on them!"

This accusation arises amidst increasing competition between Grok, xAI's large language model, and OpenAI's ChatGPT. Last month, xAI launched Grok 4, touting significant performance enhancements compared to its rivals.

xAI has since introduced features such as Grok Imagine for generating images and videos, as well as personalized companion chatbots. Grok has ascended from 60th to second place in Apple's Productivity category. The free version permits a limited number of queries daily, after which a subscription is required.

ChatGPT has consistently held either the first or second position in Apple's overall rankings for much of the past year. Musk has claimed that Apple’s endorsement of ChatGPT is not based on genuine popularity. The company has showcased ChatGPT in its App Store editorial content and integrated OpenAI's technology into its Apple Intelligence rollout, directly embedding it into Siri and writing tools.

Just last week, ahead of the launch of GPT-5, OpenAI announced substantial bonus payouts for around 1,000 employees, amounting to approximately one-third of its full-time workforce.

GPT-5 is now accessible to all users, with Plus subscribers enjoying enhanced usage and Pro subscribers gaining access to GPT-5 Pro, a version designed for extended reasoning, providing even more thorough and accurate responses.

Point of View

It's critical to analyze the allegations made by Elon Musk against Apple regarding favoritism towards OpenAI. This situation underscores significant concerns around fair competition in the tech industry. While Musk's claims warrant investigation, we must remain objective and recognize the complexities of the evolving AI landscape, ensuring that all voices are heard fairly.
