New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) The Thane Consumer Commission has mandated Ola Electric Technologies to either replace a defective electric scooter or issue a full refund to the buyer, highlighting significant service failures and unfair trade practices. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (Additional Thane) stated that the scooter exhibited multiple defects from the outset, and the company did not adequately resolve these issues.

The commission characterized the company's actions as a clear example of deficient customer service.

The complaint originated from a Navi Mumbai-based lawyer who purchased the scooter in July 2024 for Rs 96,997.

According to his complaint, problems began to surface just two days post-delivery.

During his initial significant journey, the scooter reportedly encountered acceleration problems and stalled multiple times in traffic.

The complainant also raised concerns about a critical battery malfunction, stating that during an August 2024 ride, the charge level plunged from 21% to 3% within a mere 500 meters, leading to an abrupt stop that could have resulted in a severe accident.

Despite sending numerous emails and messages, the customer claimed he received no communication from the company until he brought the matter to light on social media.

Even after the scooter was taken in for repairs, he faced delays and a lack of updates. The commission noted that the vehicle was not reported to the appropriate garage initially.

When the scooter was finally returned months later, it was in a deteriorated state, marked by scratches and cleanliness issues, the order disclosed.

The commission concluded that the persistent issues from the very first ride indicated that the scooter was indeed defective.

It also noted that the company failed to provide timely information and unnecessarily withheld the vehicle for an extended period, which constitutes both a failure in service and an unfair trade practice.

Additionally, the commission remarked that the return of the vehicle during the ongoing case seemed like an attempt to conceal the company's negligence.

In its verdict, the commission instructed the company to replace the scooter with a new one that matches the original specifications.

If a replacement is unfeasible, the company must refund the total amount paid by the consumer along with 6% annual interest.

Moreover, the company has been ordered to pay Rs 20,000 in compensation for the mental distress caused, plus Rs 15,000 to cover legal expenses.

Since the company did not attend the commission proceedings or submit a response, the case was resolved in their absence.

Point of View

Especially within the electric vehicle sector. It emphasizes the need for manufacturers to uphold quality and service standards, ensuring that customers are treated fairly and responsibly.
