New Delhi, Oct 25 (NationPress) The Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) initiative, which was launched ten years ago, has achieved remarkable success, and the credit for its widespread awareness can be attributed to Piyush Pandey — a Padma Shri awardee and a leading figure in Indian advertising, as noted by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday.
More than a decade ago, on January 5, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi entrusted “me with the rollout of the ambitious UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme to transform India's energy consumption by promoting efficient lighting solutions,” Goyal shared on the X social media platform.
“Our goal was to reach every household not just through policy, but through impactful messaging that resonated deeply, and that's where Piyush Pandey played a significant role,” stated Goyal.
A true supporter of PM Modi's vision, he created a captivating and inspiring video dedicated to the citizens of India.
The message struck a chord with the populace, and his creative genius significantly contributed to increasing awareness about energy conservation.
“This initiative has not only resulted in considerable savings on electricity bills for millions of households but has also led to a major decrease in carbon emissions,” the minister noted.
Originally launched as the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) and subsequently rebranded, UJALA aimed to transform household lighting by offering affordable energy-efficient LED bulbs, tube lights, and fans to millions of Indian residences.
As of January 6, 2025, the UJALA initiative has successfully distributed 36.87 crore LED bulbs, establishing it as one of the most broadly embraced programs in the nation.
This initiative, conducted in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and DISCOMs under the Ministry of Power, aimed to make energy-saving technologies accessible while tackling challenges such as high electrification costs and carbon emissions.
Over the last ten years, UJALA has grown into the world’s largest zero-subsidy domestic lighting program, showcasing India's dedication to reducing energy consumption, enhancing environmental consciousness, and promoting economic efficiency.
