SEBI Chief: India’s Capital Markets Show Resilience Amid Global Challenges
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 14 (NationPress) In a recent address, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), emphasized that India’s capital markets are strengthening and evolving even as they face ongoing global challenges.
During a media briefing, the SEBI Chairman urged retail investors to avoid impulsive reactions to transient market changes.
"Patience is key for retail investors," Pandey remarked, noting that historically, markets have rebounded following significant global disruptions.
He indicated that the Indian capital markets are expanding in both scale and diversity.
"They are deepening, diversifying, and growing increasingly robust. However, as these markets expand in complexity, they also become more intertwined with global events, leading to a changing market landscape," he explained to the audience.
Pandey acknowledged the turbulence in global markets, citing geopolitical conflicts, technological changes, and energy supply issues as factors contributing to uncertainty.
"Geopolitical conflicts are reshaping economic ties. For instance, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has significantly affected energy supplies, consequently impacting capital markets," he stated.
He observed that volatility has become a hallmark of contemporary financial markets, driven by the rapid dissemination of information across economies. Nonetheless, such periods of instability are temporary.
"A vital lesson is that extreme volatility phases are not enduring," Pandey added.
He pointed out structural transformations in global markets, highlighting economic fragmentation, evolving trade routes, and the increasing influence of technology.
"With algorithmic trading, artificial intelligence, and advanced data analytics, the pace of market operations is accelerating," he noted.
Pandey also highlighted the swift dissemination of information as a potential danger.
"Information spreads rapidly, opinions travel even faster, and crucially, markets today react almost instantaneously to prevailing narratives," he remarked.
According to the SEBI Chairman, it is vital for policymakers to ensure that the rapid pace of change does not undermine market stability.
Looking towards the future, he asserted that the next stage of India’s economic evolution will necessitate deeper bond markets, enhanced institutional involvement, and ongoing technological advancements.
Pandey underscored SEBI's initiatives aimed at safeguarding investors, including monitoring deceptive content on social media and bolstering surveillance systems like PaRRVA to identify potential market manipulation and misinformation.
