Seoul, Dec 6 (NationPress) Samsung Electronics has reinforced its dominance in the global foldable smartphone arena during the third quarter of this year, according to industry data released on Saturday.
In the July-September timeframe, Samsung captured a remarkable 64 percent of worldwide shipments of foldable smartphones, reflecting an 8 percentage point increase compared to the same period last year, as reported by Counterpoint Research, a prominent market analysis firm, according to Yonhap news agency.
The South Korean tech giant has successfully widened its lead over China's Huawei Technologies Co., which maintained its market presence at 15 percent during the same period, the report highlighted.
Motorola Mobility secured the third position with a 7 percent market share, followed by Honor Device at 4 percent, Vivo Mobile Communications at 4 percent, and Xiaomi at 2 percent.
According to the report, global shipments of foldable smartphones surged by 14 percent year-on-year, achieving a record quarterly high, significantly driven by the acclaim of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 series.
During the third quarter, foldable smartphones constituted 2.5 percent of all smartphone shipments, the report noted.
Looking ahead, the market analyst anticipates rapid growth in the global foldable smartphone sector next year, propelled by technological advancements and an increasing appetite for premium devices, especially with Apple Inc. reportedly working on its own foldable smartphone, expected to debut as early as 2026.
Samsug has recently unveiled its first trifold smartphone, featuring dual folding hinges and a generous 10-inch display when fully opened, as it expands its portfolio of foldable devices.
The Galaxy Z TriFold offers a 6.5-inch cover display when folded, akin to its foldable counterpart, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, enabling users to adapt the device for various scenarios, as stated by Samsung Electronics.
The Galaxy Z TriFold will be available in a single model with 512 gigabytes of storage in black, priced at 3.59 million won (approximately US$2,430).
Notably, the Galaxy Z TriFold is the slimmest option among Samsung's foldable series, measuring 12.9 mm when folded and 3.9 mm when completely unfolded.
