Seoul, July 10 (NationPress) Samsung Electronics is gearing up to introduce its inaugural tri-folding smartphone later this year, marking a new addition to its flagship Galaxy collection.
"We are diligently working to unveil it before the year concludes," stated Roh Tae-moon, president and head of the Device eXperience (DX) division at Samsung Electronics, during a press briefing following the Galaxy Unpacked event, which revealed the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 models in New York, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
The company has recently hinted at the arrival of a foldable device featuring three screens.
During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in March, Samsung displayed concept devices with tri-folding displays, known as the Flex G and Flex S, indicating its ongoing innovations in this domain.
The upcoming launch of a tri-folding phone comes as Samsung Electronics aims to strengthen its dominance in the competitive foldable market, especially in the face of increasing competition from Chinese rivals like Huawei. The Huawei Mate X3 Ultimate, a tri-fold model, has already been released.
Since launching its first foldable model in 2019, Samsung Electronics has been a pioneer in the foldable phone market, facing intensifying competition from tech giants such as Google and Motorola, along with Chinese manufacturers.
According to industry data, Samsung Electronics maintained a lead in the foldable phone market with a share of 32.9 percent in 2024, followed by Huawei at 23.1 percent and Motorola with 17 percent.
To uphold its leadership, Samsung Electronics has upgraded the performance of its latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 models. Their features and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities are now nearly equivalent to the company's premium Galaxy smartphones.
At the summer edition of Galaxy Unpacked 2025, hosted at the Duggal Greenhouse in New York City, Samsung Electronics introduced its slimmest and lightest foldables to date, complete with enhanced camera and AI functionalities.
The device folds to a mere 8.9 millimeters and expands to 4.2 mm, compared to the previous model, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which measures 12.1 mm and 5.6 mm. It weighs just 215 grams, making it lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra, Samsung's premier S series model launched in January.
Despite the reduced dimensions, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a 6.5-inch external display and an 8.0-inch main display, with the inner screen being 11 percent larger than that of the Fold 6.
The Fold 7 comes equipped with a 200-megapixel wide-angle camera, enhanced by Galaxy's signature image processing and editing features, and powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.
