Samsung Set to Unveil 'Extended Reality' Headset in 2024

Seoul, Dec 13 (NationPress) The South Korean technology leader, Samsung Electronics, announced on Friday its plans to introduce an 'extended reality' (XR) headset in collaboration with Alphabet’s Google and Qualcomm in global markets next year.
This innovative XR headset is part of a collection of wearable devices that will leverage the new iteration of Google's Android software, known as Android XR, which has been developed alongside Samsung.
A representative from the company mentioned via phone, 'The XR headset product will be available in global markets at some point next year. Currently, specific details regarding the product remain undisclosed.', as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
Extended Reality encompasses a wide array of technologies including virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality.
The upcoming headset, codenamed Project Moohan, derived from the Korean term for 'infinity', is designed to integrate Google's Gemini chatbot at its foundation, enabling users to manage their applications through conversational commands and physical gestures.
Equipped with Qualcomm's XR2 Gen 2 chip tailored for mixed-reality devices, the Samsung headset is expected to offer cutting-edge performance.
Shahram Izadi, Google's vice president of XR, stated that Android XR has been crafted as an open and cohesive platform for headsets and smart glasses featuring screens embedded in their lenses.
In addition, Google is expected to launch smart glasses built on Android XR, although the exact launch date remains undecided.
The introduction of Google's new operating system and Samsung's headset is anticipated to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro headset as well as Meta Platforms’ smart glasses and virtual reality offerings.
In other news, Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong reaffirmed his dedication to contributing to the global community's initiatives for secure, innovative, and inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) technology during an international summit, as stated by the company.
'AI is not only transforming industrial innovation and economic progress, but it is also fundamentally altering how we live, work, and interact with our surroundings,' Lee commented during a video conference at the leaders' session of the AI Seoul Summit held the previous day, as reported by Samsung.
