New Delhi, Nov 3 (NationPress) Senior IAS officer Sanjay Garg has officially taken on the role of Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards, which is India's national standards organization, effective from November 1 this year, as stated in an official announcement made on Monday.
Garg, who belongs to the 1994 batch of the Kerala cadre, brings a wealth of experience from over three decades in diverse administrative roles, excelling in strategic planning, policy formulation, and implementation across multiple sectors. These sectors include agriculture, food logistics, defence, industrial promotion, finance, and various social initiatives at both the state and national levels.
Before assuming his position at the Bureau of Indian Standards, he worked as Additional Secretary in the Department of Agriculture, Research and Education (DARE) and as Secretary of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). During his tenure at DARE and ICAR, he was instrumental in leading the digital transformation by integrating IT into Research Management and Administration. He significantly contributed to the expansion of the Kisan Sarathi portal, which directly connects farmers with agricultural scientists.
His extensive experience also includes managing World Bank Projects in India, promoting the deregulation of the defence industry, and various industrial promotion initiatives, notably in the leather sector.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is tasked with developing and establishing standards for both products and services in India. It oversees quality certification, implements conformity assessment frameworks, and hallmark precious metals to guarantee safety, reliability, and quality for consumers. The activities of BIS align with national policies focusing on consumer protection, food safety, environmental safeguarding, and more.
In his capacity as Director General of BIS, Garg will also assume the role of President of India's national committee within the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In this capacity, he will advocate for India’s interests in the global arena that sets standards for electrical and electronic technologies.
