Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited posted its highest-ever quarterly sales of 2,01,723 units in Q2 FY27 (July–September 2026), marking a 40% year-on-year jump from 1,44,397 units in the same quarter last fiscal. The record comes even as the second quarter is traditionally considered a softer period for the automobile industry.
September 2026 Performance
In September 2026 alone, Tata Motors sold 70,210 passenger vehicles — including electric vehicles — a 15% increase from 60,907 units in September 2025. Domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 68,810 units, while international business contributed 1,400 units during the month.
EV Business Surges 90% in Q2
The company's electric vehicle segment emerged as the standout growth driver, with combined domestic and international EV sales surging 90% year-on-year to 47,150 units in Q2 FY27. This sharp acceleration reflects rising consumer preference for greener mobility and, according to the company, continued tailwinds from GST 2.0 implementation. For the full quarter, domestic passenger vehicle sales climbed to 1,96,674 units from 1,40,189 units a year ago, while international volumes rose 20% to 5,049 units.
What the MD Said
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, attributed the performance to strong demand momentum and a healthy order book. 'Looking ahead, we remain optimistic about the festive season, supported by a strong order book and healthy customer traction across the portfolio. As we progressively scale up production, our focus will be on fully leveraging this demand, sustaining our growth momentum and further strengthening our competitive position in the market,' he said.
Maruti Suzuki Posts Strong September Numbers
India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, reported total sales of 2,36,013 units in September 2026, up from 1,89,665 units in the year-ago month. Domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 1,81,838 units, compared with 1,32,820 units in September 2025. Total domestic sales, including light commercial vehicles, stood at 1,85,252 units, while exports reached 44,219 units. Sales to other original equipment manufacturers were reported at 6,542 units.
Maruti's H1 FY27 Picture
For the first six months of FY27, Maruti Suzuki's total sales rose to 13.8 lakh units from approximately 10.8 lakh units in the same period last year. Domestic sales including OEM supplies increased to 11.5 lakh units, while exports grew to 2,32,855 units. The numbers indicate a broad-based recovery across both volume and export fronts for the industry leader. With the festive season now under way, both automakers are poised to test whether this momentum can be extended into Q3 FY27.
