Mumbai, Sep 1 (NationPress) Tata Motors announced on Monday that its total domestic sales decreased by 2 percent year-on-year (YoY) to 68,482 units in August, down from 70,006 units in the same month last year.
The company's report indicated that total sales, including exports, reached 73,178 units, slightly above the 71,693 units recorded in August 2024.
This decline in domestic sales was primarily due to the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, which experienced a 7 percent drop to 41,001 units, down from 44,142 units the previous year.
In a contrasting performance, the commercial vehicle (CV) sector showed strength. Domestic CV sales increased by 6 percent to 27,481 units, while total CV sales, including exports, surged 10 percent YoY to 29,863 units.
Medium and heavy commercial vehicles, such as trucks and buses, also displayed growth, with domestic sales at 13,405 units, compared to 12,008 units in August 2024.
Despite the decline in overall passenger vehicle sales, Tata Motors’ electric vehicle (EV) segment achieved remarkable success.
The company reported its highest-ever monthly EV sales of 8,540 units, marking a 44 percent increase compared to August of the previous year.
Tata Motors emphasized that this record highlights the growing consumer trust in EVs and the accelerating transition towards green, zero-emission mobility.
Total passenger vehicle sales, including exports and EVs, totaled 43,315 units in August 2025, a 3 percent decrease from 44,486 units in the same period last year.
The company reiterated its commitment to expanding its EV lineup and strengthening its commercial vehicle sector, even as demand for passenger cars moderated during the month.
Additionally, last month, the Indian automobile giant announced its re-entry into South Africa's passenger vehicle market after six years, launching three SUVs and an entry-level compact hatchback.
“Our return to South Africa signifies a major milestone in Tata Motors’ global journey. We are excited to introduce our new generation of vehicles—engineered with cutting-edge technology, uncompromising safety, and modern design—to a market that values safety, quality, and innovation. Partnering with Motus, we are confident in providing a superior ownership experience that resonates with South African consumers and contributes significantly to the local economy,” stated Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., on August 20.
