Telangana inflation highest among all states at 6.15% in May: SBI Research
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Telangana has recorded the highest consumer price inflation among all Indian states since January 2026, with the rate standing at 6.15% in May 2026, according to an SBI Research report released on 13 June. The elevated reading is attributed to higher fuel taxes, rising rural wages, and a heavy dependence on imported fresh produce — structural factors that have kept the state persistently above the national average.
Regional Inflation Divide
State-level Consumer Price Index (CPI) data reveals a sharp regional disparity across the country. Of the 36 states and Union Territories, between 12 and 14 are running inflation above the all-India level. Major states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan are among those where inflation continues to outpace the national benchmark, according to the report.
Notably, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Odisha recorded more than a 2% increase in inflation during the January–May 2026 period — significantly above the all-India rise of just 1.19% over the same window. Despite these outliers, the SBI Research report noted that the majority of states and UTs recorded inflation in the 2–4% band during this period.
National CPI Rises to 3.93% in May
India's headline CPI inflation climbed to 3.93% in May 2026, up from 3.48% in April. The report points to rising petrol and diesel prices and a slight LPG shortage as key contributors to the uptick.
Transport inflation surged by 176 basis points to 1.8% in May compared to April. Inflation in the restaurants and accommodation services segment — which is heavily dependent on LPG — rose by 154 basis points to 5.7% in May, up from 4.2% in April. This comes amid broader concerns about the pass-through effect of global energy price movements on domestic household budgets.
Gold, Silver and Personal Care Costs Rise
A moderate rise in gold and silver prices pushed up inflation in the personal care division by nearly 80 basis points. At the item level, silver jewellery contributed 56 basis points to headline inflation, while gold added 30 basis points — unchanged from the previous month.
Global commodity trends, as reflected in the World Bank Pink Sheet, showed stronger inflation in silver relative to gold. The contribution of petrol to headline inflation increased to 14 basis points, while LPG shortages reportedly drove up prices of cooked meat and cooked snacks.
What This Means Going Forward
The persistence of above-average inflation in Telangana and several other major states underscores the uneven nature of India's price stabilisation. With the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) having recently eased its policy stance, state-level divergences of this magnitude could complicate the transmission of monetary policy to the ground level. Analysts will watch whether fuel tax rationalisation or supply-side interventions at the state level can bring Telangana's inflation back within a more manageable band in the months ahead.
