Thali costs up 2% in April as tomato prices surge 38%, LPG rises: Crisil
The cost of preparing both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis at home rose 2 per cent year-on-year in April 2025, driven by a sharp spike in tomato prices and higher cooking fuel costs, according to the latest Roti Rice Rate (RRR) report released by Crisil Intelligence. The findings point to sustained pressure on household food budgets, with further stress expected through the summer months.
Key Price Movements in April
Tomato prices surged 38 per cent compared to the same period last year, the report noted, citing lower production caused by a reduction in acreage across southern states. Vegetable oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder prices each climbed 7 per cent, reflecting continued global supply-side pressures.
