WhatsApp Business AI launched in India for 24/7 SME customer support
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Meta-backed WhatsApp on 7 May 2025 announced the launch of 'Business AI' in India, bringing AI-powered customer support directly to the WhatsApp Business app to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) manage customer engagement round the clock. The feature enables eligible businesses to respond to queries, capture leads, book appointments, and drive sales — all without requiring additional tools or third-party platforms.
What Business AI Does
The new tool is designed to handle customer conversations 24/7, automating responses to frequently asked questions related to products, services, pricing, discounts, and shipping. It can be customised using a business's own information — including existing business profiles, product catalogues, and documents — allowing for tailored, context-aware interactions.
According to WhatsApp, the AI will support conversations in all native languages in India, a significant feature given the country's linguistic diversity. Starting soon, the platform will also enable UPI-based payments within chats, allowing businesses to complete transactions directly inside the messaging app.
Control Remains with Businesses
Despite the automation, WhatsApp has clarified that businesses retain full control at all times. Owners and managers can take over any conversation from the AI whenever needed, and the feature can be modified or switched off entirely. Eligible businesses can activate Business AI through the WhatsApp Business app by navigating to the Tools tab and selecting 'Your Business AI', where guided setup steps are available.
The rollout to all eligible businesses on the WhatsApp Business app is expected to be completed over the coming weeks.
The Case for AI in Indian SME Customer Engagement
Citing an internal study, WhatsApp noted that 91% of online adults in India chat with a business every week — a figure that underscores the scale of customer interaction that SMEs must manage. For businesses with limited staff and resources, handling high volumes of queries consistently has long been a structural challenge.
Ravi Garg, Director of Business Messaging at Meta India, said the tool directly addresses this gap.
