Los Angeles, Dec 30 (NationPress) Iconic actor Anthony Hopkins has achieved 49 years of sobriety. This milestone comes just a day before he celebrates his 87th birthday.
The Oscar-winning star shared a heartfelt video on Instagram, recounting the pivotal moment he chose to stop drinking, according to reports from People magazine.
“Forty-nine years ago today, I stopped,” he said in the video, mimicking a drinking gesture. “I was having so much fun, but then I came to realize I was in serious trouble, unable to recall anything while driving a car completely intoxicated. That fateful day, I understood I required help. So, I reached out.”
“I contacted a group of individuals like myself, alcoholics. And that was it. Sober. I’ve enjoyed more in these 49 years than ever before,” he continued.
According to People, he utilized his platform to motivate those grappling with alcoholism, urging his followers to seek assistance and reassuring them that they are not alone.
“If you have a problem, enjoying life is fantastic, and having a drink is okay, but if you’re struggling with alcohol, help is available,” the star stated. “It’s not a terrible situation; it’s a condition if you’re allergic to alcohol. Seek help. There’s plenty of support out there. What I didn’t realize is that I was not alone. There are thousands of people like me. Regardless, I became sober, and while that may sound dull, I’ve experienced a remarkable life. They continue to hire me and provide me with opportunities.”
Hopkins' motivating message arrives as he approaches his 87th birthday on December 31, New Year’s Eve, a holiday often linked to heavy drinking. Thus, his advice is particularly relevant for those considering a Dry January as they welcome in 2025.
He wrapped up his message with, “With that, Happy New Year!” while blowing a kiss.
