Music composer Anu Malik has opened up about his cherished recording sessions with veteran singer Kumar Sanu during the golden era of 1990s Bollywood, describing how the singer's presence would instantly transform the mood inside the studio. The composer shared these memories on the dance reality show India's Best Dancer Season 5, broadcast on 13 August.

The Studio Atmosphere Kumar Sanu Created

The anecdote came to light when host Haarsh Limbachiyaa asked both music veterans about what their recording sessions were actually like behind closed studio doors. Anu Malik recalled the moment fondly, saying: 'Humne bohot kaam kiya hain aur 90s ka poora daur dekha hain. Jab Sanu studio aate the, toh poora mahol hi badal jaata tha.' (We worked together a lot and witnessed the entire era of the 90s. Whenever Sanu would enter the studio, the entire atmosphere would change.)

The occasion was prompted by contestants Ritesh and Prateek, who delivered a high-energy performance on the track 'India Wala Dance', prompting the two legends to reminisce about their storied musical partnership.

Kumar Sanu's Unshakeable Trust in Anu Malik

Anu Malik went on to share a particularly telling detail about how Kumar Sanu approached their collaborations — with complete, unconditional faith. He recalled that Sanu would never listen to a song before recording it. Using the track 'Sambhala Hai Maine Bahot Apne Dil Ko' as an example, Malik said Sanu would learn the lyrics and simply trust that the composition would be exceptional.

'Sabse pehle, joh gaana record hona tha, woh kabhi sunata hi nahi tha... yeh gaane ke unhone lyrics likh liye aur mujhe dekh ke soch rahe the, Pata nahi yaar, shayad achha hi hoga, ab Anu ji ne banaya hain toh achha hi hoga,' Malik recounted. (First of all, he would never listen to the song that was to be recorded... he had learned the lyrics and would look at me thinking, 'I don't know, maybe it will be good. Anu ji has composed it, so it must be good.')

Even after a full rehearsal, Sanu's response was equally generous. Malik recalled asking for his feedback, to which Sanu replied: 'Arey Dada, agar aapne banaya hai toh kamaal hi hoga.' (Oh Dada, if you have composed it, it must be amazing.)

Anu Malik's Promise to Collaborate Again

The composer did not stop at nostalgia. He expressed a heartfelt desire to work with Kumar Sanu once more, describing the singer's voice as one that will endure through generations. 'Yeh mera saubhagya hoga ki main phir se Kumar Sanu ke liye gaana banaunga. Kyunki woh itne lajawab singer hain ki jab bhi aate hain, agar gaana chaar chaand ka hota hai toh usme barah chaand laga ke jaate hain. Yeh woh awaaz hain joh hamesha zinda rahegi, aur hum jald hi saath kaam karenge yeh mera vada hain,' Malik said. (It will be my good fortune to compose a song for Kumar Sanu again. He is such a phenomenal singer that whenever he comes in, if a song already has four moons, he adds twelve more to it. His is a voice that will live forever, and I promise that we will work together again soon.)

The Malik–Sanu partnership produced some of the most enduring tracks of Hindi cinema's most commercially vibrant decade.
