Christina Applegate Reveals Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Generosity After ‘Anchorman’ Salary Disparity
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, March 6 (NationPress) Actress Christina Applegate revealed how Will Ferrell and Adam McKay generously shared parts of their salaries with her from the film ‘Anchorman’.
The actress made an appearance on ‘The View’ to promote her memoir, ‘You With the Sad Eyes’, as reported by ‘Variety’.
Initially, the studio offered her a salary significantly lower than her male counterparts for the role of Veronica Corningstone, prompting Ferrell and McKay to step in and contribute to her earnings.
She explained, “When the first offer came, it felt a bit insulting. I realized my worth and refused to accept it. They wanted me on board and said, ‘We’ll contribute’. I’m grateful they did because it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life.”
Continuing, she stated, “It was such an enlightening experience. I had never engaged in improv before. Learning from that talented group was like a masterclass that people pay to attend. Steve Carell was an incredible teacher. Adam McKay had a unique approach to it with his team. Being part of that was truly magical and invaluable for my career.”
According to ‘Variety’, ‘Anchorman’ follows Ferrell’s character, San Diego news anchor Ron Burgundy, as he navigates the challenges posed by his new female co-anchor, Applegate's Veronica Corningstone. The film also features Carell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, and Fred Willard.
This movie is celebrated as one of the most quotable comedies of the early 2000s and led to the sequel ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’ in 2013, which again featured Applegate.
In 2024, Applegate and Ferrell reunited on her podcast to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the beloved comedy.
Ferrell reminisced about the first test screening of ‘Anchorman’ and how it didn’t unfold as expected, particularly due to an original ending that involved Applegate's character being “abducted by a vigilante group”.
