Arjun Das on #Love: 'I know people truly, madly, deeply in love'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor Arjun Das, one of the fastest-rising stars in South Indian cinema, has said he firmly believes love and marriage still work in the modern era — and that he personally knows people who are living proof of it. Speaking on 3 October in Chennai ahead of the release of his new Netflix webseries #Love, Das offered a thoughtful defence of romance in the age of dating apps and shifting social norms.
What Arjun Das Said About Love and Marriage
During a media interaction centred on #Love, Das was asked whether marriage remained relevant given that women had grown increasingly independent and a section of society now viewed matrimony as suited only to those who preferred dependence over autonomy. The actor, who has personally chosen to stay single, was candid in his response.
'I personally think it does work,' he said. 'I have friends of mine. I know people who are truly madly deeply in love. They are having very happy marriages. I think a lot of people now, thanks to the new era of the visual world, are getting to meet a lot of others. They get to know them. Of course, it takes time to know whether they are comfortable with each other. I think it is still very much going on.'
Das also addressed the changing dynamics between partners in contemporary relationships. 'Of course, women are getting independent. People want their space. But I think it has also reached a point where the understanding has grown between people. Where they respect each other's space. They also want to see the other person grow. And they want to embark on a journey together. I still think love, that is something that will always be timeless. I don't think that is going to change,' he added.
About the Series #Love
The six-episode series #Love is directed by Balaji Mohan and produced by Soundarya Rajinikanth, who also serves as showrunner. It streams on Netflix and stars Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi in the lead roles.
Set against the competitive world of rival dating apps FOUND and Find My Bae, the show centres on founders Tara and Matthew — two people who have built businesses helping everyone else find love, while failing to find it themselves.
Director Balaji Mohan's Vision
Director Balaji Mohan had earlier explained the thematic intent behind the series. 'When we made #Love, we wanted to tell a story that feels like it belongs to today. Romance has evolved, the way we meet people has changed, but the emotions at the heart of relationships remain incredibly familiar and timeless,' he said. He added that the show was not simply about two people falling for each other — 'friendship, family, ambition and finding yourself are equally important parts of their journeys.'
Context: Romance in the Streaming Age
The release of #Love comes at a moment when Indian OTT platforms are increasingly investing in relationship-driven narratives that reflect urban, digitally connected audiences. With dating apps and evolving gender roles reshaping how younger Indians think about partnership, the series — and Das's own remarks — tap into a wider cultural conversation about whether traditional notions of love and commitment still hold. As the show begins streaming, audience reception will be a key indicator of how resonant that conversation remains.
