A viral video featuring the late Asha Bhosle from a singing reality show shows her reminiscing about Lata Mangeshkar. She shared her sister's sentiments, saying, “Didi often remarked that all the music directors have departed. All the singers have gone. She remembered the names, saying, ‘See, Kishore has left, Rafi sahab has gone, Mukesh bhai has left, Geeta has gone. Shamshad bhai has left. Now we are the last Mughals remaining.’ When she left this world, I told her, ‘You have also departed. I am now the last. I am the last of that era.’ I sang my first song in 1943 and I am still singing today. I am the last Mughal.”
Asha Bhosle passed away at 93 in Mumbai on Sunday. She was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday. Ashish Shelar, the Culture Minister of Maharashtra, confirmed the news outside the hospital. Her final rites are scheduled at Shivaji Park on Monday at 4:00 PM.
One of the most impactful singers of her generation, Asha Bhosle recorded her first playback song for the 1943 Marathi drama ‘Majha Bal’. She is renowned for her unforgettable tracks like ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko’, ‘Do Lafzon Ki Hai Dil Ki Kahani’, ‘Kya Ghazab Karte Ho Ji’, ‘O Haseena Zulfonwale Jane Jahan’, and ‘Ye Ladka Hay Allah Kaisa Hai Diwana’, among many others. Besides Hindi, she has lent her voice in almost 20 different Indian and international languages.
In 2006, Asha Bhosle revealed that she had recorded nearly 12,000 songs throughout her illustrious career. Over the decades, she collaborated with many celebrated music composers including Shankar-Jaikishan, RD Burman, OP Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri, and AR Rahman. Throughout her career, she received multiple accolades for her remarkable contributions to music, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
