Bhumi Pednekkar Calls Shrinking Women-Led Stories Heartbreaking in Film Industry
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 31 (NationPress) Actress Bhumi Pednekkar, who recently participated in the International Film Festival Delhi (IFFD) 2026, expressed her concern over the diminishing space for women-led stories in mainstream cinema. However, she highlighted that the emergence of OTT platforms has created more significant and impactful opportunities for female performers.
“With the rise of OTT, particularly for women, the narratives have gained more strength as many shows and films feature female leads, which seems to be declining in traditional cinema,” Bhumi, who began her cinematic journey with an unconventional part in the 2015 film “Dum Laga Ke Haisha,” remarked.
“It’s truly disheartening to witness this trend,” the actress, known for her significant roles in films like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Bala, and Saand Ki Aankh, added.
She recognized that digital platforms have become a powerful alternative, providing rich and varied roles for women. According to her, this evolution allows actresses to delve into more complex and audacious characters.
“Simultaneously, there’s a surge in these platforms where we are granted excellent opportunities. I believe women have always been more daring, and they are quite bold in their script selections,” she noted.
“OTT provides them with the ideal platform,” Bhumi concluded, who is not afraid to portray characters with depth, such as a closeted lesbian in Badhaai Do, and in social dramas like Bheed, Afwaah, and Bhakshak.
Her latest appearance was in Daldal, a psychological crime thriller television series created by Suresh Triveni and directed by Amrit Raj Gupta. The series is based on Vish Dhamija's bestselling novel Bhendi Bazaar.
Daldal follows DCP Rita Ferreira, the youngest officer to lead the Mumbai Crime Branch, as she becomes embroiled in a tense and emotionally charged investigation of a brutal serial killer wreaking havoc in the city.
