Mumbai, June 18 (NationPress) Renowned actress and filmmaker Renuka Shahane has expressed her worries regarding the evolving trends in the Indian film industry, especially the increasing audience inclination towards OTT platforms compared to traditional theater experiences.
In her reflections on the current cinematic landscape, she pointed out how altered viewing habits are impacting the fate of content-driven films, placing many filmmakers and producers in challenging circumstances. In an interview with IANS, Shahane recognized that the landscape has significantly transformed for filmmakers, producers, distributors, and theater owners.
Discussing the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’ star remarked that the mandatory cessation of film production and the shutdown of cinemas directed audiences towards OTT platforms. She contrasted this with the pre-pandemic scenario, noting that audiences were previously more open to a diverse array of narratives beyond just blockbuster hits.
“This is indeed a troubling situation for filmmakers and producers, as well as for distributors and theater owners. During the Covid crisis, we were all compelled to pause our work. For two years, we were consuming content exclusively on OTT platforms, which is why they gained immense popularity across the country. However, prior to that, I believe that in the Hindi film industry, as well as in Marathi cinema, numerous narratives that weren’t necessarily mainstream blockbusters were thriving before the onset of Covid,” she elaborated.
Yet, Renuka voiced her fears that audience preferences have shifted following the pandemic. Many viewers now choose to wait for films to premiere on streaming services, leading to a decline in theater attendance—particularly for mid-budget or content-focused movies. “Currently, only larger-than-life stories seem to attract theater-goers,” she remarked, adding that even OTT platforms are reluctant to acquire films unless they have had a theatrical run.
Renuka Shahane commented, “Many families who used to frequently purchase tickets for theaters are now opting to wait for films to arrive on OTT. Thus, only epic subjects are being viewed in theaters. For everything else, the situation is precarious because OTT platforms are not acquiring films unless they have been released in theaters.”
