Sanjay Gupta Critiques Film Industry's Dependence on Two Major OTT Platforms
Mumbai, Dec 29 (NationPress) Director Sanjay Gupta, known for his works like Kaante, Shootout at Wadala, and Kaabil, voiced his frustration regarding the film industry's reliance on two major OTT platforms.

Mumbai, Dec 29 (NationPress) Director Sanjay Gupta, celebrated for films like Kaante, Shootout at Wadala, and Kaabil, has openly criticized the current state of the film industry, stating it is now subject to the dominance of two OTT platforms.

While the director chose not to specify which platforms he was referring to, he shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter) saying, “Having been part of the film industry since my teenage years and directing for three decades, I never anticipated that the entire framework would falter to such an extent, being beholden to just two OTT platforms. LITERALLY.”

Many users responded to his statement, suggesting that the industry should reevaluate its approach.

One user pointed out, “It’s not just the OTT platforms at fault. The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed numerous sectors, with the film industry among the most affected. The OTT platforms seized the opportunity that cinemas were unable to provide during the pandemic. It’s a shortcoming of producers and directors who failed to draw audiences back to theaters. The issue lies in Bollywood’s obsession with formulaic films over those emphasizing technical quality. In contrast, Telugu cinema is still attracting audiences. Look at hits like RRR, Pushpa, and HanuMan. Plus, let’s not ignore the high prices of snacks at theaters; a family of four can easily spend ₹2000 just to watch a movie. The exorbitant ticket prices for some films are also to blame. So, before casting blame elsewhere, perhaps it’s time for some self-reflection.”

Another user remarked, “This is simply disruptive change. Just as filmmakers expanded into multiplexes leading to the decline of single-screen theaters, change is inevitable.”

A third user added, “The downturn isn’t due to OTT; it’s a result of a lack of compelling content. For years, Bollywood has produced films focused on propaganda or mediocre action. Audiences now seek better entertainment from regional films and OTT. It’s time to abandon the propaganda and focus on genuine entertainment.”

Sanjay Gupta is known for his adaptations of American action-thrillers and crime films, often casting Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham in leading roles.
