The screenplay is adapted by Nina Raine from Gaitskill’s highly praised novella, which was recognized for its insightful exploration of the #MeToo movement upon its release in 2019. Notably, Gaitskill's short story ‘Secretary’, from her 1988 collection ‘Bad Behavior’, was also adapted into the 2002 cult classic featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader.
