Nasa astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have embarked on a 45-day rehabilitation program to help them adjust to Earth’s gravity following their nine-month space journey.
The two astronauts returned early on Wednesday (Indian time) aboard SpaceX's Crew-9 mission, splashing down off the coast of Florida.
Williams and Wilmore's extended stay in space was unplanned. They launched aboard Boeing's Starliner on June 5 of last year for what was intended to be an eight-day mission.
However, technical complications with the spacecraft's propulsion system led to an unanticipated extension of their stay aboard the ISS. Their circumstances received significant attention, igniting debates regarding space travel safety and even political discussions.
The return process initiated after Crew-10 docked with the ISS on Sunday, allowing Williams, Wilmore, NASA's Nick Hague, and cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov to prepare for their journey home.
Actor Madhavan also took to his Instagram to share a welcome message for the astronauts, stating, “Welcome back to Earth our Dear Dear Sunita Williams. Our prayers have been answered…It is wonderful to see you safe and smiling. After over 260 uncertain days in space, this is all God’s grace and the prayers of millions being answered. Great job to everyone at #spacexfalcon9 #nasa and the entire crew. God bless you.”
