Mumbai, July 18 (NationPress) Actress Freida Pinto is poised to take the lead in Netflix's forthcoming series “Unaccustomed Earth,” which is based on the collection of short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri.
Pinto will portray Parul Chaudhury in this series, which was initially announced in April. As reported by variety.com, Netflix has ordered a total of eight episodes.
The series is described as “an epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama about a close-knit Indian American community grappling with themes of love, desire, and the quest for belonging.”
“Unaccustomed Earth” is rich in nuance, passion, and unforgettable characters, inviting viewers into the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge. The plot thickens when a star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long-lost love raises eyebrows, leading to a scandalous affair that redraws battle lines in this tightly woven immigrant community.
Pinto gained fame for her breakout role in the Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire”, directed by Danny Boyle, marking her cinematic debut.
Her filmography includes titles like “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Knight of Cups,” “Hillbilly Elegy,” and “Mr. Malcolm’s List.” On television, she is recognized for her performances in “Guerilla,” “Surface,” and “The Path.”
John Wells is co-writing the adaptation alongside Madhuri Shekar.
Nisha Ganatra, who originally secured the book rights and developed the series, will also serve as an executive producer. Jhumpa Lahiri will join her as an executive producer, alongside Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow of JWP, and Celia Costas. Warner Bros. Television, where Wells holds an overall deal, will be the production company.
This marks the latest adaptation of a Lahiri work for the screen. Her novel “The Namesake” was turned into a film in 2006, featuring Kal Penn, Tabu, and the late Irrfan Khan.
The Namesake, directed by Mira Nair, tells the story of immigrant Bengali parents Ashima and Ashoke, who strive to adjust to life in America while their son Gogol seeks his identity, torn between two worlds.
