Actor Gaurav Khanna has revealed that his foray into reality television extends beyond trophy-hunting, serving instead as a deliberate laboratory for character development and role preparation. Speaking to IANS on 6 May, the Anupama star disclosed that he treats reality show participation as a strategic learning exercise, meticulously observing fellow contestants' personalities and behavioural patterns to enrich future dramatic portrayals.

The Method Behind Reality TV

Khanna underscored his approach: "As an actor, I observe people constantly. Even in reality shows, subconsciously, I am learning, watching, and storing experiences that might help me in future roles." Rather than viewing the format as purely competitive, he frames it as experiential research — a space where he absorbs personality traits and emotional nuances that translate into layered character work.

Growth Over Survival

The actor emphasised that his participation philosophy prioritises personal evolution over conventional success metrics. "It's not about survival; it's about growth. After a point, you want to do something new and step out of your routine," Khanna explained. He characterised reality shows as offering access to "a different audience and a fresh perspective," positioning each appearance as an experimental venture rather than a predetermined path to victory.

Khatron Ke Khiladi and Beyond

With his entry into Khatron Ke Khiladi imminent, Khanna dismissed comparisons to his prior reality show wins — MasterChef and Bigg Boss. "I don't think like that. I never enter a show with the trophy in mind. I take it one step at a time," he stated. He stressed the unpredictability inherent in a stunt-based format: "Khatron Ke Khiladi is unpredictable, you cannot plan for it. Every episode teaches you something new about yourself."

Khanna rejected the notion that established television faces receive preferential treatment. "It's not true that a popular face automatically wins. A lot of money and effort go into making a show, so no one compromises that just for popularity," he asserted, emphasising instead his focus on "what I learn" rather than outcome-driven participation.
