Chennai, Nov 8 (NationPress) Malayalam actress Gouri Kishen has bravely confronted a YouTuber who posed a body shaming question during a recent press conference. She has now released a statement expressing her gratitude for having the strength to uphold her dignity in a challenging situation.
The actress has received support from various organizations including the Nadigar Sangam, the AMMA Association, and the Chennai Press Club. In her statement, she shared, "Earlier this week, an interaction occurred between myself and a YouTube vlogger that turned unexpectedly heated. It’s essential to recognize the larger issue at play so we can collectively consider the type of relationship we wish to foster between artists and the media."
Gouri added, "As someone in the public eye, I realize that scrutiny comes with the territory. Nonetheless, comments or inquiries—whether direct or indirect—that focus on a person's body or appearance are unacceptable in any scenario. I would have preferred to discuss the film, which was the purpose of my attendance."
Implying a bias towards actresses, Gouri questioned whether male actors would be subjected to similar inquiries in the same confrontational manner.
She stated, "I can’t help but question if they would ask a male actor the same way, in such an aggressive tone. I am thankful for being able to stand my ground in a challenging situation; it was vital not just for me but for anyone who has experienced similar instances."
Addressing the normalization of body shaming, she remarked, "This practice has been prevalent for some time, yet it continues to exist. I hope this serves as a reminder to anyone who has felt belittled that we are entitled to speak up. We can voice our discomfort, challenge what is wrong, and work towards breaking this cycle."
While clarifying that this was not an invitation to target the individual involved, Gouri expressed profound gratitude for the support she received. "It was unexpected, overwhelming, and humbling. A heartfelt thank you to the Chennai Press Club, AMMA Association (Malayalam Film Industry), and South India Nadigar Sangam for your statements. I am also grateful to the press, media, and public for their unwavering support. I appreciate everyone in the industry who has reached out and shown solidarity, including my contemporaries, colleagues, and friends," she concluded.
