Mumbai, July 21 (NationPress) Renowned filmmaker Hansal Mehta has expressed his strong discontent regarding the cancellation of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2025, referring to it as “a cruel irony”. He emphasized that it is indeed ironic that the self-proclaimed guardians of cinema could not sustain a festival that belongs to them.
In a heartfelt post on a microblogging platform, the director of 'Aligarh' lamented, “It’s a cruel irony that Mumbai, adorned with the glamour of being India’s financial and cinematic hub, fails to uphold a film festival of its own. Deserted by the self-proclaimed guardians of cinema who pursued glitzier platforms and safer options, it was left to a handful of dedicated believers to keep the flame alive. Unfortunately, that delicate light has now been extinguished.”
He further remarked, “There was no fanfare. No uproar. Just a quiet and gradual erasure. What should have served as a cultural pillar has been diminished to a mere footnote - yet another victim of indifference masquerading as progress.”
The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival has been a significant part of the film community for nearly thirty years. However, the organizers announced on social media on Monday the cancellation of this year's festival.
An official statement from Festival Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur was shared on the festival's X account.
The announcement stated, “We regret to inform you that the 2025 edition of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival will not occur as we are currently in the process of revitalizing the festival with a fresh vision and a new team. This is to ensure the festival returns as a premier platform for showcasing the finest independent, regional, and classic cinema from both India and around the globe.”
Nevertheless, they mentioned that a ‘revamped’ edition of the festival would return next year.
“We are diligently working on rescheduling the festival and will announce the new dates for the 2026 edition shortly. Thank you for your understanding and support,” he added.
The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is known for presenting a diverse array of independent, regional, and international films.
