Did Hema Malini's Mother Disapprove of Her Dancing Barefoot on Hot Rocks for Sholay?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, January 27 (NationPress) - Renowned Hindi film icon Hema Malini recently reflected on one of the most physically challenging periods of her celebrated career while filming the legendary dance sequence from the classic Sholay. In a candid interview with IANS during a magazine cover unveiling that marked 50 years of Sholay, she disclosed that her mother had vehemently opposed her dancing barefoot on blistering rocks in the sweltering heat of May.
Hema shared, “My mother was deeply concerned about my well-being while dancing on those heated rocks, especially given the extreme temperatures.”
She described the filming conditions as excruciatingly tough. “The sand, mud, and especially the rocks were intolerably hot. Stepping barefoot on the stones was agonizing. My mother suggested I wear a thin sole to lessen the pain,” she recounted.
“However, that plan was short-lived,” Hema continued. “Rameshji noticed it right away and insisted I take it off. He explained that it would be visible on camera during the dance, which wouldn’t look appropriate,” the actress elaborated.
“I tried hard to persuade Ramesh Sippy to schedule the shoot for November or December, explaining that it would be too hot in May for a decent performance. But he was adamant about filming in May,” she added.
Hema concluded, “After filming, I would soak my feet in cold water and wrap them in chilled towels to relieve the pain. I believe my years of Bharatanatyam training fortified my legs and feet to withstand this ordeal. More than anything,” she remarked.
Ramesh Sippy also acknowledged, “Despite the discomfort, Hema Malini completed the shoot. It was an act of great courage. I believe her inner spirit played a crucial role in overcoming it.”
For those unfamiliar, this sequence has become one of the most unforgettable moments in Sholay. Released in 1975, Sholay is celebrated as one of the most iconic films in Indian cinema, featuring Hema Malini alongside legends such as Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, AK Hangal, and Sachin Pilgaonkar in pivotal roles.
It was masterfully directed by Ramesh Sippy.
