Mumbai, May 1 (NationPress) National Award-winning director Shoojit Sircar has referred to the late, esteemed actor Irrfan Khan as the foundation of their critically acclaimed 2015 film “Piku”. His performance as Rana continues to resonate with audiences, ensuring the film remains a classic even after his demise.
“Piku” is scheduled for a re-release on May 9. The film, which celebrates its 10th anniversary, features notable stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Irrfan Khan, along with Moushumi Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, and Raghubir Yadav. The storyline follows Piku, an architect, and her aging yet demanding father Bhaskor Banerjee, as they bond during a road trip to Kolkata, overcoming their conflicting ideologies and petty arguments.
When questioned about Irrfan's impact on Piku and whether his role as Rana continues to inspire viewers even posthumously, Shoojit shared with IANS: “Absolutely.”
“While we were developing the film, he was an integral part of the concept even before the script was finalized, as we envisioned the character. Imagining Piku without him was simply unthinkable.
“He was always a key player. Thanks to him, this film holds its ground. He is the backbone of the film, serving as the observer who represents the audience amidst the chaotic dynamics of the father-daughter relationship. He raises critical questions, making him the true essence of the film.”
Shoojit, who cherished a close friendship with Irrfan, emphasized that without the late star, “this film would not be possible.”
In 2018, Irrfan Khan disclosed his diagnosis of neuroendocrine cancer, undergoing treatment in the UK for a year before returning to India in February 2019.
He tragically passed away at the age of 53 on April 29 after being hospitalized in Mumbai for treatment related to a colon infection caused by the illness.
Regarding the enduring appeal of Piku and whether he has noticed fresh interpretations or responses from newer audiences, Shoojit remarked: “Yes, I believe the film has matured significantly. The current generation connects with it deeply, pointing out relatable themes from Piku's life that remain relevant.”
He elaborated, “Many young viewers, who perhaps didn’t see Piku when it first came out, perceive it as a love story filled with subtlety and depth, rather than a straightforward romance.”
