Mumbai, Jan 17 (NationPress) After A.R. Rahman recently expressed concerns about his diminishing opportunities in the Hindi film industry, linking it to evolving power structures and alluding to a potential “communal issue”, esteemed lyricist Javed Akhtar has categorically dismissed this notion.

In sharing his insights, Akhtar noted that he has never sensed such sentiments in Mumbai and emphasized that Rahman continues to enjoy significant admiration throughout the industry.

“I have never perceived this kind of feeling. I interact with people here in Mumbai. They hold great regard for him,” Akhtar informed IANS.

He further explained that many might assume the composer is often unavailable due to his busy international commitments and large-scale performances, which require substantial time and dedication.

“People might think that he has become excessively occupied in the West. They might believe that his performances are monumental. He invests considerable time in those events. Hence, he may not be accessible to us,” Akhtar remarked.

Additionally, Akhtar highlighted that Rahman’s prominence is so immense that even smaller producers may hesitate to approach him.

He stated: “Rahman is such a towering figure. Even a small producer may feel intimidated to approach him.”

Refuting the idea of any communal undertones, Akhtar asserted that Rahman remains approachable and reassured that if contacted, the composer would undoubtedly respond.

“But I don't perceive any communal aspect in this. If you reach out to him, he will surely come,” he stated.

In an interview with the BBC Asian Network, Rahman mentioned that reasons often reach him indirectly and referred to it as “Chinese whispers”.

He elaborated during the interview: “Individuals lacking creativity now hold the power to make decisions, and this may have a communal dimension as well, though not directly towards me.”

“It reaches me as Chinese whispers that they booked you, but the music company proceeded to hire their five composers. I thought, 'Oh, that's wonderful, I can relax with my family now.'”
