Los Angeles, April 25 (NationPress) Actress Julia Garner, recognized for her roles in “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna”, aims to connect with a “different kind of audience” through 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps'.
The 31-year-old actress, who will portray Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer in the film, shared with Entertainment Weekly: “She’s unlike any character I’ve ever portrayed, which was a significant factor in my decision to take on this role. I understand that not everyone will watch 'Ozark', 'Inventing Anna', or 'The Assistant'.
“People often prefer certain genres, and that's why I’m eager to explore various genres, and one reason I was drawn to Marvel is that it reaches a different audience.”
Garner immersed herself in “a lot of the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer comics” ahead of filming. She expressed her excitement about working on a Marvel project, according to reports by femalefirst.co.uk.
Starring alongside Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Joseph Quinn, Garner recounted: “When I was offered this role, I thought, ‘Wait, what? Me?’ I was almost in disbelief because it felt so extraordinary.”
“I knew who the Silver Surfer was, and I learned even more about him once I signed on. I really immersed myself. I read a lot of the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer comics before starting the project, and I realized this version of 'Fantastic Four' would be presented in a very unique manner compared to previous films.”
Her performance was influenced by the comic books she engaged with. However, Garner admitted that, unlike her character, she doesn't actually know how to surf.
When asked about her surfing skills prior to her casting in the Marvel film, Garner replied: “I’m actually afraid of the ocean. So, no, but I can act.”
“I had some friends who are surfers teach me some techniques before I traveled to London to understand the body positioning. I later discovered while in London that I used some surfing movements, but I also drew heavily from the comic books.”
“The poses depicted in the comics were not typical surfing stances; they resembled something you might observe in sculptures. Thus, I combined surfing with the elegance of sculptural poses, almost akin to dance. It was a blend of influences, but much of my inspiration came from the comics.”
