Mumbai, Dec 10 (NationPress) Director Karan Razdan has opened up about his past relationship with his ex-wife Priya Tendulkar. He is currently reviving the iconic television series from the 1980s, ‘Rajani’, in which his former spouse played the lead role.

Karan shared with IANS, “I spent years honing my skills in theatre, while Priya had no formal education in acting. Her learning stemmed from hands-on experience in plays penned by her father, the esteemed Vijay Tendulkar. Her talent was innate and extraordinary. Reviving ‘Rajani’ is a significant undertaking, but it's crucial because today's environment makes spreading awareness more complex. With numerous platforms available, reaching every part of the nation has become a daunting task. Yet, it's a necessity.”

He reminisced about their bond, expressing, “When we tied the knot, she always felt a unique connection because I used to write during the original ‘Rajani’ era. She often said she perceived a resemblance of her father in me, which was a high compliment. She had a habit of asking me to write roles for her, finding immense joy in delivering my lines. She used to say, ‘You deliver some lines, I’ll deliver others, and someday our daughter will too.’”

Priya Tendulkar was celebrated for her daring and influential roles on television throughout the 1980s and 1990s. She earned fame for ‘Rajani’, where she depicted a fierce homemaker battling daily corruption and social injustices. Her portrayal transformed the character into a cultural icon of civic activism.

Priya’s career also encompassed Marathi and Hindi films, as well as theatre. Beyond her acting, she was a staunch advocate for women’s rights and social reform. Each episode of the show tackled prevalent public issues, making Rajani a relatable figure of civic engagement.

The series struck a chord with audiences for its reflection of real-life challenges faced by urban middle-class families, encouraging viewers to hold authorities accountable. Rajani became a cultural landmark, remembered for its social impact, gripping narrative, and Priya Tendulkar's captivating performance.
