Mumbai, October 4 (NationPress) - The iconic actress Sandhya Shantaram, beloved wife of the legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram, has sadly passed away at the age of 87. Recognized for her remarkable performances in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, she was celebrated for her extraordinary acting and dancing prowess that made a lasting impact on viewers.

Sandhya gained prominence through her work in V. Shantaram's films during the 1950s and 60s. Notable among her memorable films is “Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje” from 1955, which showcased classical dance on the cinematic stage, as well as “Do Aankhe Baraah Haath” from 1957, a National Award-winning film that continues to set the standard in Indian cinema.

Her significant role in “Navrang” in 1959 further demonstrated her innovative performance, complemented by captivating music and visuals. The songs from these films, particularly “Jhanak Jhanak Tori Payal Baje Payaliya” and “Nain So Nain Nahin Milao”, became immensely popular, solidifying her status as one of the most successful actresses of her era.

In the realm of Marathi cinema, Sandhya's role in “Pinjra” (1972), directed by V. Shantaram, became legendary. The song has since achieved cult status as a Lavani song in the Marathi industry. “Pinjra” also attained classic status in Marathi cinema, marking another significant achievement in her illustrious career. Originally hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Sandhya relocated to Mumbai to advance her film career. She became V. Shantaram's third wife and starred as his leading lady in numerous acclaimed productions.
