Guwahati, Oct 4 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the legendary singer Zubeen Garg. On Saturday, the SIT documented the testimonies of his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and sister, Palmee Borthakur.
Investigating Officer Moramee Das confirmed, "I recorded the statements of Garima Saikia Garg and Palmee Borthakur today. As the investigation is ongoing, I am unable to provide further details at this moment."
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 in Singapore while attending the fourth edition of the North East India Festival, an event organized by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his company.
Initial reports indicate that the celebrated singer drowned while swimming at sea. Following his untimely death, over 60 FIRs were filed across Assam, implicating Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and several others, including band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta.
In response to these allegations, the CID of Assam Police has taken over the investigation. To date, the festival organizer, Garg’s manager, and two band members have been arrested.
They have been presented in front of the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court and are now remanded for 14 days in police custody.
Authorities stated that custodial questioning is underway to uncover the events leading up to Garg's unexpected death. The SIT continues to scrutinize evidence, interview witnesses, and validate claims to determine if negligence, lapses, or intentional misconduct were involved.
Officials have assured that the investigation will be conducted in a "transparent and time-bound" manner.
Simultaneously, the Governor of Assam has established a One-Man Commission of Inquiry to explore the broader aspects surrounding the singer’s death abroad.
Led by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, the commission was officially notified on October 3 under Section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952.
The commission's objectives include investigating the sequence of events before and after Garg’s death, identifying any potential shortcomings by organizers or officials, and determining if external factors or conspiracy played a role in this tragic incident.
Zubeen Garg, a revered cultural figure in Assam, leaves behind a devastated fan base across the Northeast and beyond as investigators continue their pursuit of answers.
