Lupita Nyong'o Reveals Her Battle with Over 50 Fibroids
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, February 26 (NationPress) - Renowned Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong'o has bravely shared her struggle with more than 50 uterine fibroids. The 42-year-old star was first diagnosed with this condition 11 years ago, wherein non-cancerous growths form in or around the uterus, leading to symptoms such as prolonged and heavy menstrual cycles, alongside pelvic, back, and leg pain.
According to reports from ‘Female First UK’, Lupita expressed that her situation has worsened, with limited treatment options now available.
During her appearance on Today, she revealed, “The first time I had fibroids removed, they extracted 23. Now, two years ago, I learned I have over 50. I’m faced with the same choices: either surgery or endure the pain.”
The actress is currently “not prepared” to opt for surgical removal due to the significant implications it could have on her future family aspirations.
She explained, “I’m not ready to make that choice. It’s quite invasive… and poses a substantial risk to our reproductive health.”
As highlighted by ‘Female First UK’, not only does she contend with numerous fibroids, but some of them are also quite large in size. Lupita remarked, “Doctors often compare fibroid sizes to fruit. While some may be as small as a grape, my largest fibroid is comparable to an orange.”
Reflecting on her initial diagnosis, the ‘12 Years a Slave’ actress recalled feelings of shame and fear. However, she has since discovered a sense of “community” after speaking openly about her health challenges.
She stated, “Initially, I felt shame. I wondered what I had done to cause this. I felt isolated and anxious for my reproductive health. Now, I feel empowered as I’ve connected with others. I’ve united with women who have long been fighting this battle. There’s immense strength in sharing our stories. When I spoke out, the support I received from others saying, ‘me too,’ made me feel less alone and has genuinely motivated me to continue my advocacy work.”
