R. Madhavan joins Vishal Furia's new horror film as director's 'OG horror star'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor R. Madhavan, celebrated for his turns in cult horror titles 13B and Shaitaan, is set to headline a new horror feature film directed by Vishal Furia, produced by Rohit Ranjan under the banner Frostlit Production Limited. The pairing brings together one of Indian cinema's most recognisable horror leads with the genre's most prolific contemporary director.
Furia's first and only choice
For Furia, the casting decision was never in question. 'Madhavan sir was always my first and only choice. I'm stoked that he has come on board and has already started getting into the world of the film. He is the true OG horror star of the cult classic Indian horror 13B — one of my favourite films of all times,' the director said in a statement.
Furia added: 'His conviction, his experience and his understanding of serious horror are very rare, and I couldn't think of anyone better for this film.'
What audiences can expect
Furia hinted at an ambitious creative vision, stating: 'Madhavan sir has years of experience as a writer, director and producer, so it's really special to have him with us on this film. Together, we want to create something audiences have never seen before in Indian horror — the kind of fear they will feel in their bones!' No release date or platform details have been disclosed yet.
Madhavan's horror legacy
13B: Fear Has a New Address, released in 2009 and directed by Vikram Kumar, starred R. Madhavan alongside Neetu Chandra. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil — the latter version titled Yavarum Nalam — the film follows a family that moves into a new apartment on the 13th floor, only to find a spirit communicating with them through their television set. It has since acquired a devoted cult following.
More recently, Madhavan appeared in Shaitaan, a supernatural psychological horror film directed by Vikas Bahl, co-starring Ajay Devgn, Jyothika, Janki Bodiwala, and Anngad Raaj. An adaptation of the 2023 Gujarati film Vash, the film centres on a family whose daughter falls under the spell of black magic cast by a stranger.
Vishal Furia's growing horror universe
Furia has steadily built a reputation as the defining voice of contemporary Indian horror. He made his mark with the Marathi film Lapachhapi, before expanding the Chhorii universe and most recently directing Maa, starring Kajol. Notably, Furia himself made a cameo in Maa. With this new project, Furia appears to be pushing the genre further into mainstream Hindi cinema territory.
The collaboration signals a broader consolidation of Indian horror talent, with a filmmaker known for building horror universes now pairing with the actor long regarded as the genre's most credible lead.
