Mumbai, May 22 (NationPress) National Award-winning filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who is eagerly anticipating the release of his upcoming film ‘Thug Life’, has described his frequent collaborator A. R. Rahman as an “enigma”.
In an interview with IANS, Ratnam revealed that Rahman's approach to music is quite distinct, as he doesn’t confine himself to the limits of a specific scene. Instead, he creates a soundscape that aligns with the overall mood of the film.
Ratnam expressed, “Rahman, in a sense, is an enigma. It’s not always necessary for him to have a mood set for him. He doesn’t simply focus on a scene or situation; he internalizes the feel of the entire film and begins conceptualizing the music and soundscape for the whole project. His vision is broader, and he continuously seeks new ideas.”
He further noted that Rahman consistently goes beyond expectations with each project. After all, accolades like the Oscars and Grammys are not easily attained.
“He is not one to settle for what is merely requested. He doesn’t just provide what I want; he offers something extra. He also brings forth what he wishes to express. Our collaboration is about finding a mutual understanding,” said the director.
Recently, the track ‘Sugar Baby’ from ‘Thug Life’ was unveiled, showcasing music composed by the renowned A. R. Rahman, featuring actress Trisha Krishnan in a mesmerizing dance performance that captures attention.
‘Thug Life’ stars the legendary Kamal Haasan and marks his second collaboration with the acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades; their last project together was ‘Nayakan’.
Produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, R. Mahendran, and Siva Ananth, ‘Thug Life’ is scheduled for a global theatrical release on June 5, 2025.
