Butler expressed his admiration for young Thames, highlighting his seamless performance as Hiccup.
Reflecting on their time together on set, Butler remarked, “I knew Mason had talent to earn the role, but being in scenes with him had me thinking - Wow. This kid’s good.”
He continued to commend Thames, stating, “He puts in tremendous effort, cares deeply, and possesses a raw, innate ability. He listens, absorbs, and recognizes that learning from fellow actors is as crucial as any acting class. Witnessing him as Hiccup—showing humor, confidence, uncertainty, heartbreak, and the drive to prove himself—was remarkable. He navigated each moment with subtlety and accuracy. One of the true benefits of live-action was observing a gifted young actor like Mason introduce fresh elements to the role. Now that I’ve seen the film, I can confidently say—he’s exceptional.”
The story is set in the Viking village of Berk, where Hiccup, a young inventor, feels the weight of his father, Chief Stoick the Vast’s, immense expectations.
