Neha Dhupia Embraces Liberation in Her De-Glam Role for '52 Blue'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 15 (NationPress) Neha Dhupia is venturing into an exciting new territory with her inaugural international project titled 52 Blue, where she will portray a de-glam character for the very first time. The actress expressed that embracing a makeup-free look was not a concern for her; instead, she found it to be liberating.
In her own words, Neha stated: “52 Blue has been one of the most profoundly moving and transformative experiences of my career. Upon reading the script, what resonated with me was the quiet strength of the mother—she doesn’t raise her voice, but her presence profoundly influences her son's life.”
Directed by the acclaimed Egyptian filmmaker Ali El Arabi, 52 Blue is a touching coming-of-age tale that chronicles a young Indian football fan's journey as a migrant worker heading to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The film delves into themes of identity, aspiration, and resilience, all set against a deeply emotional familial backdrop.
Neha remarked that portraying a mother for the first time was both a challenge and an incredibly rewarding experience.
“This role required me to connect with emotions that are raw, instinctive, and fundamentally human,” she added.
She further mentioned: “The de-glam aspect of this character was never a worry for me; rather, it was liberating. It allowed me to discard any layers of vanity and fully embody the life of this woman—her silences, her resilience, and her unconditional love.”
“There’s something profoundly powerful about portraying a character who draws strength from vulnerability.”
The film also features Adil Hussain, who plays Neha’s husband, marking their first collaboration on screen.
Extensively filmed in Kochi, India, 52 Blue follows the journey of Ashish (Yadav Shashidhar), a young boy growing up under the oppressive control of his father on a secluded island.
With the quiet strength and encouragement of his mother, alongside the inspiration from his late brother, Ashish ultimately finds the courage to break free. His journey leads him across borders to meet his idol, Lionel Messi, at the 2022 FIFA World Cup—his first encounter with the vast world beyond his confined upbringing.
Reflecting on her experience with Ali El Arabi, Neha stated it has been enlightening.
“His storytelling is remarkably honest and grounded, creating a safe environment for actors to explore and push their limits. Filming in Kochi, in such a unique and intimate setting, brought immense authenticity to the film,” she shared.
At its core, Neha believes, “52 Blue is a narrative about dreams, about breaking free, and about the invisible forces—like a mother’s belief—that shape who we become.”
“I feel immensely grateful to be part of a film that strikes a universal chord emotionally while being deeply personal in its storytelling. It’s a narrative I believe will resonate with audiences across various cultures and borders.”
Produced and directed by Ali El Arabi under his banner Ambient Light, which operates in Cairo and Los Angeles, the film is executive produced by Tariq Al-Naama, with Krysanne Katsoolis, Joe Matthews, and Katara Studios acting as co-producers.
