Mumbai, July 6 (NationPress) Actor Rajkummar Rao has shed light on the ongoing discussion regarding the Hindi-Marathi language issue in Maharashtra, as well as the notable silence among Hindi film actors regarding such crucial matters.
In a recent interview with IANS, the 'Stree' star articulated his perspective on why not all actors feel compelled to speak publicly on every issue and emphasized that silence does not equate to apathy. When questioned whether Bollywood figures avoid commenting on the Hindi-Marathi debate and other controversial topics to maintain political correctness, Rao replied that individuals should express their thoughts on issues they genuinely care about, but not out of obligation.
He elaborated that while actors are significantly impacted by societal issues, the expectation to voice those feelings publicly—particularly on social media—can be misconstrued. Rajkummar Rao stated, “If there’s an issue you feel passionate about, you should certainly discuss it. However, it isn’t essential to comment on every single matter. Just because you don’t post about something online doesn’t mean you lack concern for it. That notion is quite peculiar. I have a deep love for my country.”
“Beyond just my national pride, whenever something tragic occurs, I feel a profound sadness. As actors, we are notably sensitive individuals. I experience deep sorrow. But if I choose not to share that on social media, it’s mistakenly assumed that I didn’t feel anything. Since when did social media become the yardstick for gauging whether someone cares? If you share, it indicates concern, and if you don’t, it suggests indifference? Who made those rules? There are countless individuals in this country and around the globe who aren't active on social platforms—do they not feel empathy? They do. Don’t they experience joy when positive events happen? Absolutely.”
Drawing from personal experiences, the 'Srikanth' actor recounted how deeply troubled he was by images of a recent airplane crash during his shooting schedule, expressing that he wept upon seeing them, yet refrained from sharing those emotions online.
“I was moved to tears by the airplane crash reports. We were filming at the time it occurred. But is it really necessary to broadcast on social media that I cried over it? No, those are personal emotions that one may or may not have. Overemphasizing social media could detract from the genuine sensitivity of the situation.”
In recent news, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray have opposed the proposal to introduce Hindi as a third language in Marathi-medium and other public schools. Recently, the Maharashtra government had suggested Hindi as an optional third language in state schools.
