Mumbai, July 6 (NationPress) Actor Rajkummar Rao has spoken out regarding the ongoing discourse surrounding the Hindi-Marathi language conflict in Maharashtra, while also addressing the apparent silence of Hindi film actors on critical issues.
In a recent interview with IANS, the 'Stree' star expressed his thoughtful perspective on why not every celebrity chooses to comment publicly on every matter, emphasizing that silence does not equate to apathy. When questioned about whether Bollywood actors steer clear of controversial subjects to maintain a politically correct stance, Rao stated that individuals should voice their opinions on issues that resonate with them, but not out of obligation.
He elaborated that while actors are often profoundly impacted by societal issues, the expectation to convey these feelings publicly—particularly on social media—can be misconstrued. Rajkummar Rao remarked, “If there's an issue you feel strongly about, you should definitely talk about it. But it's not necessary to speak on every issue. And just because you don't post about something on social media doesn't mean you don’t care about it. I think that's a bit strange. Like, I love my country—I love my country immensely.”
“But beyond national sentiments, if any unfortunate event occurs, it deeply distresses me. As actors, we are inherently sensitive individuals. I feel a profound sadness. However, if I choose not to express this on social media, it is assumed that I am indifferent. Since when did social media become the benchmark for gauging someone's concern? Does posting imply concern, while silence indicates a lack of feeling? Who established that standard? There are countless individuals in this nation and across the globe who are not active on social media—do they not experience emotions? Of course, they do.”
Sharing personal anecdotes, the 'Srikanth' actor recounted being emotionally affected by the images of a plane crash during a shoot, admitting he wept upon seeing them, yet opted not to broadcast those emotions online.
“I've cried when I saw those airplane crash visuals. We were filming at that time. But is it essential to announce on social media, 'Look, I cried when I saw this'? No, it is a personal emotion, whether you express it or not. Overemphasizing social media might detract from genuine sensitivity.”
Recently, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray expressed their opposition to the proposal of including Hindi as a third language in Marathi-medium and other government schools. Just days ago, the Maharashtra government had suggested Hindi as an optional third language in state-run educational institutions.
