Mumbai, Feb 20 (NationPress) Director Ram Madhvani, renowned for his works like ‘Neerja’ and ‘Aarya’, disclosed that he has embarked on a journey of singing lessons. He mentioned that he has been diligently practicing singing for the past year and a half.

The director reflected on his early exposure to music during his school days in Panchgani, recalling how singing awakened a deeper connection within him, igniting an enduring fascination. However, it was only recently that he decided to actively pursue this passion under the guidance of Shruti Vishwanathan, the song consultant for his forthcoming series ‘The Waking of a Nation’.

Madhvani expressed, “I began my singing journey in the last year, actually a year and a half ago. I have my mentor, Shruti Vishwanathan, who was the song consultant on The Waking of a Nation, and she is just phenomenal. You must listen to her voice. Thus, I started learning Kabir since it is integral to ‘The Waking of a Nation’.”

He was motivated by the lead actor, Taaruk Raina, who has performed four songs in the series. To ensure authenticity in his performance, Taaruk took lessons from Shruti to sing Kabir’s timeless verses. This inspired Ram Madhvani to delve into learning Kabir’s dohas, which even led him to Luniakhedi, a quaint village near Indore, where he met Prahlad Tipanya, a prominent interpreter of Kabir’s poetry.

He graciously recognized his own musical constraints while praising his wife, Amita Madhvani, stating, “Amita is a naturally gifted singer.”

Additionally, he shared his insights on discovering his voice in speech. He recollected how collaborating with actors made him realize the impact of voice modulation.

He further remarked, “I actually learned this from some of the actors I was working with. During interviews, I’d ask, ‘How come your voice changed?’ They started using their diaphragm, which made their voice sound much richer.”

As ‘The Waking of a Nation’ approaches its eagerly awaited premiere, Madhvani is resolved to keep advancing his musical skills.

“Singing is a wonderful gateway to self-discovery; hence, once the show is released, I plan to continue learning. Someday, I hope to muster the courage to perform a Kabir folk doha,” he added.

‘The Waking of a Nation’ will debut on March 7, 2025, on SonyLIV.
