Mumbai, Aug 14 (NationPress) Director Ramesh Sippy, the mastermind behind the legendary film ‘Sholay’, has shared his thoughts on the captivating bromance between the film's iconic duo, Jai and Veeru.
In a conversation with IANS, just a day ahead of the film's 50th anniversary on Friday, Sippy expressed unfamiliarity with the term ‘Bromance’, which he associated with modern vernacular. He mistakenly likened it to “Romance”, which typically implies a non-platonic relationship.
When he learned that contemporary audiences are enamored by the bromance between Jai and Veeru, he remarked, “It’s up to the audience’s interpretation. We never implied anything of that nature. What we portrayed was a strong friendship. Both characters have their own romantic interests (with other women). There was no such inclination.”
He further elaborated, “Just because someone shares a loving hug or rides a motorcycle with you doesn’t necessarily indicate anything deeper.”
In another part of the discussion, Sippy recalled a fascinating experience he had observing audience reactions during the film's initial screening.
He recounted how a cinema owner invited him to witness the audience's engagement during the film's showing.
He mentioned, “A cinema operator called me and said, ‘Come to my cinema.’ It was City Light cinema. He pointed out, ‘Look around. No one is stepping out for a cold drink during the interval.’ I was astonished. He explained, ‘Those inside are completely absorbed. They’re reacting as if they’ve never seen anything like this before.’ I asked, ‘Are you sure?’ He confidently replied, ‘Absolutely. I observe this every day; they skip the interval.’”
‘Sholay’ is celebrated as the pioneering Western Spaghetti film in Hindi cinema, featuring a star-studded cast including Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, A. K. Hangal, Sachin, and Hema Malini.
The film is regarded as one of the finest in Hindi cinema for its immense scale, stellar performances, technical excellence, action, music, and direction.
Written by the esteemed duo Salim-Javed, it has become one of the longest-running films in Indian cinema.
