Mumbai, Nov 28 (NationPress) Renowned filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, the creative force behind Bollywood's legendary 'Sholay', revealed the essence of the iconic characters Jay and Veeru, their profound friendship, and the reasons the film has solidified its status as a cult classic.
During his talk at the festival, Sippy reflected, "The best way to start is with that unforgettable song, 'Yeh dosti hum nahi todenge, todenge dum agar, tera saath na chhodenge.' This beautiful piece was penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman.
He continued, "As I often say, every individual involved – from technicians to musicians – plays a crucial role in a film like this, or any film, really. As the captain of this ship, I can guarantee that teamwork is essential for success."
Sippy emphasized, "However, a good captain and strong key players are also necessary, including writers, technicians, cameramen, and the music team. R.D. Burman truly excelled in this area!"
He remarked, "From the opening frame, you experience the atmosphere and the film's unique essence. For the first time in India, we even sourced our fight team from the UK, which added a new dimension to the film's scale and execution."
The session featuring Ramesh Sippy, which unveiled lesser-known facts about 'Sholay', was aptly titled '50 Years of Sholay: Why Sholay Still Resonates.'
During the discussion, Sippy also shared the story behind casting the late supervillain Amjad Khan for the memorable role of Gabbar.
"Amjad Khan was a serendipitous find. I had previously seen him in a play about South Africa with my sister and recognized his talent, though I had forgotten about him," he explained.
"When Salim–Javed recommended him, it felt right. He auditioned for the role after Danny Denzongpa, who was initially cast as Gabbar, was away in Afghanistan with Feroz Khan. We didn’t have to adjust anything regarding language or accent for Gabbar. Amjad's UP dialect was perfect!"
The filmmaker concluded, "Danny's absence paved the way for Amjad Khan to embody Gabbar, and the rest is part of cinematic history."
As for the cult classic 'Sholay', it featured stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Jaya Bachchan, and Hema Malini in pivotal roles.
Launched in 1975, 'Sholay' is hailed as one of the most remarkable films ever, yet it initially flopped upon release.
This cult classic not only gifted audiences unforgettable songs but also unforgettable characters like Jay, Veeru, Basanti, Thakur, and Gabbar, who remain celebrated figures in Bollywood even 50 years after the movie's debut.
