Mumbai, Aug 15 (NationPress) Producer-actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar, who portrayed the character of Rahim chacha's son in the legendary film ‘Sholay’, has shed light on a significant scene that director Ramesh Sippy decided to exclude from the final cut.
In a recent interview with IANS, as he marks the 50th anniversary of ‘Sholay’, Sachin revealed that despite the scene being cut, there were several factors influencing the decision.
He shared with IANS, “The scene where I was killed, shot at Gabbar's hideout, was removed before the film's release. This choice was made by Rameshji for three reasons. Firstly, the film's duration needed to be managed. Secondly, he achieved a superb cut featuring an ant, that we refer to as mungda in Marathi, crawling on Gabbar’s hand. He remarks, ‘Ramgadh's son has come’ before the scene shifts dramatically to my character's dead body arriving in the village, serving as a symbolic moment. This was the second reason.”
He elaborated further, “The third reason was Rameshji's belief that depicting the death of a 16-17-year-old child would appear excessively harsh. This was Rameshji's perspective, not due to censorship. At the time, as an actor, I felt quite disappointed; I had a strong individual scene with Gabbar, and it was cut. It saddened me, as it would any actor. However, as a director today, I can appreciate the decision. Rameshji made the right call.”
In ‘Sholay’, Sachin’s character meets his demise at the hands of Gabbar, played by Amjad Khan. The film celebrates its 50th anniversary this Friday.
