Comedian Samay Raina turned a moment of official recognition into a masterclass in self-deprecating humour on 27 August in Mumbai, joking about his past run-ins with the Maharashtra Cyber Cell — the very unit that was now felicitating him for promoting cyber-awareness. The event, presided over by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, saw Maharashtra Cyber unveil its awareness short film Digital Arrest and the 1930 Maharashtra Cyber Anthem, both of which Raina contributed to.

The Quip That Brought the House Down

Taking the stage to receive his felicitation, Raina wasted no time leaning into the irony. 'Maharashtra Cyber and I go way back,' he said, sending Fadnavis and other entertainment personalities in the audience into splits. He then sharpened the joke further, noting the unusual nature of the occasion: 'The Maharashtra Cyber Cell is very active. I can tell you this for sure. Today, for the first time a cyber cell officer picked up a comedian from his home only to felicitate him.' That line reportedly left Fadnavis bursting out in laughter.

A Nod to the India's Got Latent Controversy

Raina's remarks were a pointed, if playful, reference to the period when the Cyber Cell had registered complaints related to controversial comments made on his YouTube show India's Got Latent. He revealed he had already saved the helpline number 1930 in his phone — not out of civic diligence, but because he had received calls from the unit during the controversy. 'Thank you for the felicitation, sir. My association with Maha Cyber has been going on for a very long time. 1930 is really a great number. I have actually saved it because I often get calls from there,' he said.

From Open Mics to Netflix India

Raina's journey to this stage of recognition has been anything but linear. He began performing at open mics in 2017 and went on to open for comedians including Anirban Dasgupta and Abhishek Upmanyu in Pune. A suggestion from comedian Aakash Gupta led him to participate in Comicstaan 2 in 2019, where he emerged as joint winner.

Following the India's Got Latent controversy, Raina staged a deliberate comeback with his nationwide tour 'Still Alive And Unfiltered', which ran from 15 August to 5 October, opening in Bengaluru and closing in Delhi. In 2026, his debut comedy special Still Alive, released on YouTube after nearly a year away from the platform, became the most-viewed stand-up comedy special on the platform.

What Comes Next for Raina

Raina has since announced two collaborations with Netflix India: the second season of India's Got Latent, which will stream on both Netflix and YouTube, and a new stand-up special. The Maharashtra Cyber felicitation, meanwhile, adds an unexpected chapter to what has been a turbulent but ultimately resilient career arc — one that Raina himself appears more than happy to mine for material.
